Unless you’ve been living under a rock the past few months, you’ve heard about the Corona Virus global pandemic. Google COVID-19 and you’ll find ample information about common sense preventative measures. (Wash your hands, people!) A common word of advice is to try not to touch your face. For most of us, this means being extra conscious of where we put our hands throughout the day, but this hygiene practice shouldn’t end there. Washing your face is an essential part of basic hygiene. For women (and some men!), moisturizers and makeup application are also a regular part of our daily beauty regimen. So how do we prevent the spread of harmful bacteria while maintaining healthy, happy skin?
Swap jars for tubes
Moisturizers and masks often come in jars. We usually retrieve these products with our fingers, slathering them on our faces with delightful abandon. This practice is problematic because it encourages the spread of bacteria no matter how well you wash your hands (even if you follow the 20 second rule!). Perhaps you’ve considered this and have taken the cautionary measure of applying your products with one of those mini spatulas provided with some of the higher end brands. Although this practice might seem safer in theory, it doesn’t fully protect your product from bacteria that might be in the air. Everything from dust mites to gross bacteria I won’t even get into if you practice your regimen in the bathroom gets in that jar and compromises the sterility of that product. Ditching your favorite jar can be heartbreaking, but brands like Dermalogica provide stellar hygienic products to make your breakup less devastating.
About Dermalogica: Vegan, Cruelty-Free, Sustainable, Hygienic
I’m highlighting Dermalogica today because their products all come in tubes, ensuring bad bacteria (from your body or surroundings) doesn’t contaminate your product. Dermalogica is not only vegan and cruelty-free but their products are also free of the bad stuff and packed with skin-loving nutrients that work overtime to solve and prevent a variety of skincare woes. You won’t find lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil, or artificial colors and fragrances in any of their products. Instead, you can count on getting your skin’s daily dose of vitamins from a unique line of products tailored to your complexion.
Don’t let all your COVID-19-inspired handwashing be for naught. Check out my overview of the different Dermalogica product systems and what makes them so great. If your skin is as dry as mine (think Sahara, only drier), you might want to try some of my personal favorites.
AGE Smart: Good for wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dryness, and dehydration
According to Dermalogica, their AGE Smart products fight current and future signs of skin aging. Products from this line are said to fight free radical damage, stimulate collagen production, restore elasticity, even out hyperpigmentation, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and more. Dermalogica’s AGE Smart line is my favorite of their product lines because it contains their most moisturizing products. The MVP of the AGE Smart line is the Super Rich Repair, a highly concentrated moisturizer for chronically dry skin. Jojoba oil, evening primrose oil, and shea butter repair and protect the skin’s natural moisture barrier while peptides and an acid-free smoothing complex gently improve the skin’s overall texture. If lightweight moisture is your thing, I’d steer clear of this one as it’s one of the thickest creams I’ve ever used. If you’re not afraid of rapidly dissipating stickiness and are looking for a luxurious moisturizing experience that is well worth the hefty price tag, Dermalogica’s AGE Smart Super Rich Repair will become your next holy grail moisturizer.
Ultracalming: Good for sensitive skin and inflammation
Dermalogica’s Ultracalming line claims to control immunogenic inflammatory pathways that can lead to skin sensitivity. These products feel cool and soothing when applied to skin and are great for controlling redness, especially in winter or after hitting the gym! As someone with a skincare addiction and a complexion as fickle as a preteen’s hormones, I appreciate this line most when I’m suffering the consequences of some other trendy product I talked myself into trying against my better judgment. My favorite product from the Ultracalming system is the Ultracalming Cleanser. Oats, lavender, and cucumber work together to reduce puffiness caused by seasonal allergies (or stress, in my case). It’s important to note that the cleanser is pH-balanced and non-foaming, meaning its gentle formula might take some getting used to if your current cleanser is one of the harsher western brands. The Ultracalming cleanser rinses away easily without leaving any residue behind. If you’re worried the product might be too gentle, try using it after Dermalogica’s Precleanse Oil-Busting Emulsifyer.
Active Clearing: Good for adult acne, uneven skin tone, and slow cell turnover
Acne isn’t just a teen problem. Adults can experience acne too for a variety of reasons ranging from fluctuating hormones to stress, medications, clogged pores, or diet. The problem with adult acne is that the skin can’t bounce back as quickly as it can in its youth. Aging skin experiences a slower cell turnover, a longer healing period, and increased sensitivity resulting in long periods of dryness and more severe scarring. Dermalogica’s Active Clearing line aims to slough off dead skin, unclog pores, reduce scarring, and regulate oil production. Its products are effective yet gentle enough to calm inflammation and irritation caused by breakouts. I’m personally blessed with a clear face (for the most part) but have plenty of experience with adult bacne. To prepare my back for swimsuit season, I gravitate towards Dermalogica’s Overnight Clearing Gel. Salicylic acid is a well-known ingredient found in a wide range of acne-fighting products but what makes the Overnight Clearing Gel a staple in my skincare routine is its additional active ingredients. Niacinamide, biotin, zinc gluconate, caffeine, licorice, meadowsweet, and yeast extract soothe painful acne and prevent scars from forming once the offending blemishes have disappeared. The Overnight Clearing Gel is the standout product for me in this line because its nighttime-only usage ensures it will absorb into my skin without being affected by sweat or strenuous movement.
Other noteworthy products from the Active Clearing line: Sebum Clearing Masque (an oil-absorbing clay masque), Age Bright Spot Fader (a spot treatment for stubborn breakouts and their resulting scars).
Daily Skin Health: Good for Most Skin Types
If you’re a skincare newbie or are lucky enough to be free of the issues mentioned above, you can still practice safe skincare with Dermalogica’s Daily Skin Health line. The Daily Skin Health products are essentials that can be used in tandem with products from their specialty lines. If you have normal or combination skin and are looking to build a regimen, the Daily Skin Health products are a good place to start. Some of Dermalogica’s cult favorites belong to this line (such as their Multi-Active Toner and Special Cleansing Gel). As their price point is slightly more affordable than the products in some of the other lines (AGE Smart, I’m looking at you), these products are a good way to jumpstart your Dermalogica skincare journey while you figure out what products work best for you.
Other noteworthy products from the Daily Skin Health line: Stress Positive Eye Lift ( cooling depuffing gel eye masque), Solar Defense Booster SPF 50 (a broad spectrum sunscreen that can be mixed with moisturizer or foundation)
At the end of the day, hand-washing only goes so far in preventing the spread of bacteria. I took the time to sing Dermalogica’s praises because their sanitary packaging is just an added perk for an already great brand. As a nation, it’s vital for us to do everything in our power to stay safe and germ-free this year, including sanitizing our skincare routines!
